SEWING STORIES (I)

I do a double take on a couple of occasions. I spend a great deal of my days gaping at the gorgeous outfits cut into waxprint fabric.
Awkward, I know. 😳

But I also gaze at the many sewing machines I encounter in tailors' craft shops. I ask questions, wonder about their functioning.

This outdated sewing machine is a savvy (and daring) crossover between Brother and Bernina and is owned by a Mauritanian tailor who specializes in the making of melfeu (or melehfa), a traditional Mauritanian wrap dress, sari-style.

What struck me was the bobbin holder. No thread to be seen, but a stack of reels from which the thread goes into the machine. Still wondering why...🤔
